Year 5 Round Up Spring 2 Week 2

1 Mar

We've had a fabulous start to the half term - if only outside the classroom looked as great as the inside..this soggy weather seems unfair!

The pupils have been using their prior learning around fractions, as we delve into the world of decimals. By being able to use the language of tenths, hundredths and thousandths, alongside place value, we've been able to compare and order decimals such as 1.2, 1.122 and 1.1. Next week, we are moving into adding and subtracting decimals which is vital for life....think MONEY!

In Key Stage 2, we have taken our reading lessons in a slightly different direction. As we are part of the Excelsior Trust, we have been able to borrow whole class sets of novels. In year 5 we are reading "The Odyssey" (think Ancient Greeks, gods, curses and the underworld) and "The Song Walker" (a girl finds herself in the middle of the Australian outback, without any idea how she got there). Each session starts with a look at new vocabulary followed by reading of the next extract. It then ends with the children summarising the chapter.

In year 5, we are passionate about reading and can't wait to celebrate World Book Day (Friday 8th) with all the children. Each child will take home a gift and something they have made.

“A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.”

Questions to ask your child:

*What shall we read this weekend?
